Gympie wins Masters
GYMPIE'S women's football has cemented themselves as the best when it comes to their sport, walking away champions from the Maryborough Masters Games on the weekend.
Player Tanya Albion said the side was thrown together last-minute and while they had intended on playing at the games for a bit of social fun, had no problems taking out win after win over four regional teams.
"We were there for fun but the minute we hit the park, we wanted to win," Albion said.
The ladies team finished their six-set of games undefeated, including two draws.
Albion said she was impressed at the performance the side, which had never even trained together, put on, especially considering they were able to dominate well-drilled and well-practised teams.
She said it was a feat for the Gympie ladies to hold their own against a "physi
cal" Happy Rock outfit, finishing the match 1-all.
The side also took out 3-0 wins over Woombye, Maryborough A-team, Yummy Mummies and the experienced Pink Ladies, as well as a 0-0 draw against the Maryborough B team.
The side backed up straight after the Yummy Mummies win to dominate and beat the Pink Ladies.
Albion said while the players pulled up sore and stiff yesterday morning after the intense set of rounds, they were lucky to avoid any serious injury on the field.
Gympie Miners players Alexis Tramacchi and Kiah Monk were new comers to the over-30s masters' comp and made their talent known quickly.
Show-stopper Alexis Tramacchi was credited by Albion as the team's star, and said if she wasn't scoring goals, she was setting them up.
Goalkeeper Kiah Monk also was a standout for the side and kept the competition at bay with several impressive saves including a tip out of the top left hand corner of the goal.
Albion said the side, which took the overall win in the competition three years ago before exiting the event for two years, will be looking to defend their title next year.
