Gympie to cash in on rentals
A COMMUNITY housing group for low income earners says there is a big demand for new public housing in Gympie.
The Coast2Bay Housing Group expects work to start in July on a $4 million project to build 15 affordable town houses in Flynn Rd.
An advertisement in today's Gympie Times invites local tradesmen and suppliers to tender for the job, and a spokesman for the development said they wanted to keep as much of the work local as possible.
Coast2Bay CEO Morrie Evans said cash-strapped Gympie residents were lining up to join the National Rent Affordability Scheme.
"It's for people who are having difficulty getting housing or who are in housing which is expensive for them and are looking for the benefits this program will provide," he said.
Member for Gympie David Gibson said the project would be an exciting boost for Gympie, creating jobs, providing more affordable housing and delivering a boost to local confidence.
"It is one of the largest single housing investments - government or private - in Gympie for many years and shows a vote of confidence by private investors in our town after the recent flood events," Mr Gibson said.
While it will be undertaken by a private developer, the project was facilitated by the State Government under the NRAS, which provides State and Federal Government funding to investors as a subsidy over a 10 year period.
In return, those investors ensure the two bedroom, two bathroom townhouses will be genuinely affordable on the private market at a rental of 74% of the normal market rent - or just below $200 per week.
"Gympie has long suffered from a shortage of new, affordable level rental accommodation," Mr Gibson said.
"I am pleased to have helped make this proposal possible after being asked by the developer to support the case for Gympie to the various government agencies and help get NRAS endorsement."
The town houses will be managed by Gympie's Community Action Housing Services. To apply phone the Tenant Advice Service on 5482 7623 for an application form or visit the Department of Housing website.
