Gympie RSL Cup day set to explode

SOLID nominations ensure today’s Gympie RSL Cup will be a resounding success, says Gympie Turf Club president Spencer Slatter.

The Gympie Showgrounds are primed for a day of action by the track and Slatter said competition would be fierce across the five event race card, boasting at least $30,000 in winnings.

“We have some of the best nominations for a race day, so we’re expecting a big day,” he said.

Gympie trainers have a commanding presence today. Peter Fleming and Barry Gill are two local trainers involved in the main race – the $8000 Gympie RSL Cup over 1465m.

The Fleming trained Try Some Magic won the Gympie Cup in 2008 and returns today looking to conjure up the same winning form.

Gympie racing commentator Barry Fitzhenry said the Gympie sand track was “possibly” Try Some Magic’s favourite surface. Gill, meanwhile, saddles up Seekawinner for the third successive year after placing fifth last year.
