Gympie referee scores top job

GYMPIE mum Karen Kennedy is full of pride after her son, former Gympie Rugby League referee Jon Kennedy, was chosen this week as the centre referee for the FOGS Colts Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow.

Kennedy was appointed to the position of centre referee for the big game tomorrow at the official Queensland Rugby League presentation night in Brisbane Monday evening.

The final will be contested between Easts Tigers and Wynnum Manly – two sides to have shown their superiority this season.

The young Gympie referee, now living in Brisbane where he attends university, has been taking his refereeing career to new heights this season.

“Jon has been the centre referee for FOGS Colts and A Grade games this season as well as being the centre referee for the State of Origin women’s game held in Gympie (earlier this season),” Karen said.

The women’s State of Origin game was a huge success, played at Albert Park during Gympie Rugby League’s centenary celebrations.

Kennedy is well known on rugby league fields in the Gympie and Sunshine Coast Rugby League. He began his referee career eight years ago at 14. Since moving to Brisbane, he has been selected as a member of the Queensland Rugby League Referees’ Academy.

Taking to Suncorp Stadium tomorrow for the FOGS Colts Grand Final, his skills as a referee will be on show before an entire stadium.
