Police sergeant spat on

A SERGEANT from Gympie police who broke up a fight in Mary St on Friday afternoon was spat on while trying to calm an offender.

Police said an argument broke out between two men about about 3pm between the City Centre Stage and Fiveways roundabout.

Police said they were called to intervene and restrained a man, 28, of Greens Creek, who claimed he had been king hit by another male.

He was arrested for an alleged public display of hostility towards police and was handcuffed after allegedly resisting arrest and trying to break free.

The man also spat in the direction of the other man while being arrested and then at the officer, hitting him on the neck.

When placed in the back of the police car he kicked out at the window and was warned he would be charged for wilful damage if he didn't stop.

He then spat at the officer who had sat beside him to deter him from damaging the vehicle.

The man has been charged with serious assault on a police officer and for creating public nuisance and obstructing police.

He will appear in court for mention on October 24.
