Gympie poised for win after a strong innings

CRICKET: Local cricketer Troy Ashton admits luck definitely isn't his strong point as captain of the Gympie Gold. He's won the toss on only three occasions in his last 19 games for the team.

But his third-toss win on Saturday proved vital to Gold's dominant first-day innings against Noosa at Noosa.

Going in to bat, the Gold had a shaky start as openers Lewis Waugh and Dan Shepperson were dismissed on 11 runs each, but from then the Gympie team took complete control.

Ashley Sippel and Jason Johnston cracked 63 and 90 runs respectively but it was a Kaden Dickfos and Josh Brady partnership which was the highlight of the day.

Reaching 101 and 100 not out respectively, Brady and Dickfos formed a barnstorming 199-run partnership which went into the records as the club's best fifth-wicket partnership.

Captain Troy Ashton declared at 397-4, bringing the partnership to an end, but said he might have two very angry batsmen show up to training this week.

"I found out after the game they were only three runs away from the Sunshine Coast record," he said.

"I'm guessing when they find out they won't be too happy with me."

After Gympie declared, Noosa took hold of the bat and reached 11-1 before the day was over.

Ashton was confident Noosa would struggle to reach the 394-run target but said if they did, it would be a very impressive effort.

"We have some great strike power in our bowling line-up so it's going to be tough for Noosa to chase us down," he said.

"Nothing is impossible however, and if they manage to do it I will be very impressed."

The Gympie skipper said it was a good feeling to gainsay suggestions that the Gold batting order was failing.

"The boys knew they had to pick up their performance and they did exactly that," he said.

"Now that we have brushed off all the cobwebs, our remaining games this season will only get better."
