Gympie now on the global roller-hockey map
ROLLER SPORT: Gympie is set to become part of international roller-hockey history after it was announced SkateZone will play host to a one-off Test match between the Australian Southern Stars and Germany's IGR Remscheid.
The match will feature some of the best roller-hockey players from Europe as well as Australia.
SkateZone owner and former Australian representative Darren Nyberg, told The Gympie Times the match could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch the sport played at an international level.
"Roller-hockey is absolutely huge in Europe compared to Australia,” Nyberg said.
"I have been involved in roller-hockey for 30 years and I have never had the opportunity to see an international team come to Australia.
"We have not had the opportunity in Australia like we have now in Gympie.
"It is very special.”
Despite not being the original choice to host the match, Nyberg said it is unprecedented for a regional city to even be considered for such an event.
At a global level, roller-hockey is progressing through the administrative ranks and according to Nyberg, is even being considered as an Olympic contender.
"We are working hard in Australia to get the sport more recognised.
"It is very close to becoming an Olympic sport now.
"The sport is growing a lot in Australia, but there are still a lot of people that have never heard of the game.”
Play will start from 11am on Saturday, April 15, with two curtain-raisers featuring Brisbane-based teams.
