Gympie not on PM’s radar

IT is disturbing that Prime Minister Gillard's flood assistance promises appear to be disguised subsidies for the insurance industry, as well as electoral carrots.

Ms Gillard referred to industry advice in announcing help for Sydney, Ipswich and Roma.

Gympie, where flood prone properties are often seen as difficult or too expensive to insure, does not appear to show up on the insurance industry's radar, or Ms Gillard's.

We might have known.

On February 15, this newspaper published a report on Suncorp's idea of the 10 hardest hit flood communities in Queensland after ex-tropical cyclone Oswald - with Gympie not among them.

Areas like Kenmore, Runaway Bay and Mermaid Waters, where flood damage was negligible compared to that regularly suffered in Gympie, were included.

Again, we are invisible.
