Gympie Netball reaching for new heights

NETBALL: Netball Gympie is looking to match last year's target of 400 players at its second sign-on this weekend.

"We had 400 members last year and we have about 90 at the moment president Colleen Miller said.

"There are some exciting times ahead for the club as built up emerging talent,” she said.

The club's first sign-on on Sunday gave players the chance to meet the club's 2018 Samsung ambassador Stephanie Wood.

"We didn't get as many to the sign-on day as we would have hoped but it meant the girls were able to hang out with Steph for a bit longer,” Miller said.

"Steph was great. She hung around with the girls for a couple hours and we will be hoping to have her attend a few events in the year.

"These types of players don't come to Gympie often and players can see how far they can go playing netball. We want to keep that momentum going to grow the club.”

Sunday's sign-on was held in conjunction with the unveiling of a new amenities block at the Rose Street courts.

Miller said the new building was the first to be crossed off the list of much-needed upgrades and the focus was now on the remaining list.

"We have had to get by with only three toilets which were also used as change rooms,” she said.

"The $75,250 funding from the Queensland Government and the $20,000 from the club for this upgrade will allow us to grow.

"There are now six toilets and three change rooms and the old block will be used as the men's bathroom.

"The club only held one carnival in the last five years because we did not have the proper toilet facilities and hiring portable toilets was difficult.

"Next on the list is getting grants to update the clubhouse, lighting and two more new courts.”
