New store shapes up for launch

THE $1 million fit-out for Gympie's new $10 million Sunshine Mitre 10 store at the corner of Langton and Brisbane Rds began on Saturday.

The new super store will be four to five times bigger than the combined floor space of the separate Mitre 10 stores that currently service Gympie.

The $400,000 contents of seven 12m shipping containers were last week emptied out into one side of the completed building, and now the installation of shelving/fixtures is under way.

Group retail manager Darren Fanshaw said the fit-out would take seven to 10 days and would be followed by five weeks of stocking in time for the grand opening on Saturday, September 1 - the first day of spring and the day before Father's Day.

Celebrity appearances, including television personality Scott Cam, will be among the attractions and excitement on the day.

A team of suppliers and staff from all of Sunshine Mitre 10's coast stores will complete the shelving and fixture fit-out, and between 40 and 50 staff will then descend on the site for the stock fit-out, Mr Fanshaw said.

One half of the new 4700sqm building will be divided into a tradesmen's drive-through and a state-of-the-art plumbing, bathroom and lighting department, featuring six ready-built kitchens.

The other half will be the retail section, Mr Fanshaw said.

This will include a 700-800sq m nursery, giftware section, sit-down cafe and eatery, offices and the biggest showroom in the Sunshine Mitre 10 group.

Best of all it will be flood-free, Mr Fanshaw said.

Work is on schedule for the Park Tce enterprise to be closed down on the night of August 31, and the new building to open to great fanfare the next morning, he said.
