Gympie man faces court over alleged rape near Mary St

UPDATE: THE Gympie man charged with rape after he handed himself in to police has appeared in Gympie Magistrates Court this morning. 

The 42-year-old man was led to the prisoner's dock from the Gympie watchouse, where he spent the night after his arrest yesterday afternoon, and stood calmly in the prisoner's dock dressed in casual clothes as the charge was read out. 

Police will allege the man sexually assaulted a woman near Mary St on October 6.

With no magistrate on duty, an acting magistrate adjourned the case to next Monday October 17, when the man will apply for bail if he wishes to do so.

 

EARLIER: A GYMPIE man has been charged with rape after he handed himself into police.

He was immediately taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Branch where he spent the night.

The 42-year-old is facing the charge in relation to the sexual assaulting of a woman in Gympie on October 6.

He is due to face Gympie Magistrates Court today.
