Gympie High pupils win study aid
GYMPIE State High School students Charles Cox and Dan Head were recently awarded Defence Technical Scholarships after a competitive selection process where they were up against more than 2300 applicants from across Australia.
The DTS program provides a financial incentive to eligible students in Years 11 and 12 to stay at school and finish their studies while undertaking maths, English and a trade (VET) subject.
Charles and Dan both study furnishings and engineering, making them eligible for the scholarships.
Charles was awarded a $3000 scholarship and Dan a $2000 scholarship.
Both boys had to complete an application demonstrating their knowledge of technical trades within the Australian Defence Force and describe in detail what they would do as a tradesperson in a real-life crisis.
The scenario was based on providing humanitarian support after a natural disaster affecting a neighbouring country.
After graduation, Charles hopes to gain a mechanical apprenticeship with the defence force.
With another year of school to go, Dan also hopes to enter the mechanical field in the defence force, but is exploring his options.
