Growth plan for industry future

THE Gympie region has a significant industrial and residential growth future, according to the Department of Infrastructure and Planning. The department says land affordability could give us a key role in providing for South-East Queensland markets.

“Gympie is ideally located with major road and rail infrastructure and proximity to South-East Queensland,” the department’s Draft Statutory Regional Plan documents say.

“This brings with it opportunities to capture development, such as industry that cannot be accommodated on the Sunshine Coast,” the supporting comments say.

“Gympie represents an affordable option for relocating and expanding enterprises servicing the south-east corner and national freight routes.

“National manufacturing businesses are currently located within the Gympie subregion in sectors such as food items and timber goods. While some rural industries can be located in Regional Landscape and Rural Production areas, capacity has been allocated within the Gympie Urban Footprint to accommodate additional industrial lands.”

Co-ordinated land use and infrastructure planning and sequencing will be required to ensure appropriate areas are able to be used for industrial purposes.

“Rural production, including grazing, cropping and forestry, are key contributors into the Gympie subregion’s economy,” the documents say.

“Agribusiness and agricultural tourism will be key drivers for the economy in rural towns and support the urban areas of the Gympie subregion.

“Strategies for taking advantage of these opportunities should be fostered.”

The plan allows for an additional 9600 dwellings in Gympie by 2031, saying these will be required to house the Gympie subregion’s expected regional growth.

“Broadhectare development can accommodate almost 9000 dwellings, primarily within the Gympie urban footprint.

“This, with infill development, is sufficient to accommodate growth beyond 2031,” it says.

Detailed planning will be needed to provide infrastructure for the projected growth.
