Gympie Gold blitz Caloundra to secure final spot
GYMPIE Offroad Gold XI player Josh Brady became a dad on the weekend while helping his side to a semi-final win.
Brady helped the team demolish Caloundra, securing a spot in this weekend's Sunshine Coast Division One grand final.
The new father demonstrated true Gold commitment taking to the field knowing his fiancee Celia Knight was expecting at the Gympie Hospital.
Celia went into labour Friday night but at 3am Saturday, after a false call, Celia gave Brady the go ahead to play in the weekend's match.
With hardly any sleep, Brady cracked a solid 16 runs.
Just minutes after he was bowled out, he got the call to say Celia was going into labour.
He rushed to the hospital and welcomed his beautiful baby girl Soraya Brady at 10pm Saturday.
Soraya was four weeks early and weighed a light 2710 grams.
Tired and exhausted, Brady took a wicket on Sunday.
Gold skipper Troy Ashton said he was grateful for Brady's commitment and congratulated the couple on the arrival of a baby girl.
After winning the toss and batting, the Gold got off to a slow start.
The fall of two early wickets - Kaden Dickfos and Cam Quinn - lifted Caloundra's spirits.
Ashton said the team held strong.
"The boys knew they had to put the hard yards in and that's exactly what they did," he said.
"We held on to the bat for as long as we could and we were 6-196 at the finish of day one."
Brady's team-mates celebrated his new daughter, but knew they had to finish off strong.
Gympie responded totalling 249.
Ashton said it was a strong target but Gold needed some early wickets to keep out Caloundra.
"The game plan was executed perfectly and Caloundra were sitting on 6-41," he said.
Gympie bowlers grabbed hold of the game to rattle Caloundra for 109 and an easy victory.
Ashton and Dickfos took three wickets each.
The Gold will train three times this week in the leadup to the grand final against Caboolture. Ashton said Caboolture was a strong team and showed it was a force to be reckoned with at the weekend, obliterating Maroochydore by 215 runs.
The Gold is confident as it has beaten Caboolture in the teams' past three clashes.
This will be the Gold's second grand final in the history of the club, with Ashton saying it would be huge if the team could pull a win.
"We faced Caboolture back in 2003 and unfortunately went down, so revenge could never be sweeter," he said.
Josh Brady will be hoping for a win as his beer ban was revoked by Celia after Soraya was born.
"Hopefully the team can pull a win this weekend and I can drink some beers with the boys," he said.
This weekend's final will be played at John Blanck Oval in Maroochydore and if won, will be the first time the Gold has won a Sunshine Coast division one grand final.
