Gympie cricketers hopeful to be at the crease tomorrow

CRICKET: Rain again could be the story in round seven of Sunshine Coast Cricket Association one-day games if Severe Tropical Cyclone Owen persists, making it hard for the slow starters to catch the field before the new year.

Gympie are the bolters from two rounds, on 16 points after Saturday's second win gave a double bonus against Caloundra.

While Maroochydore, the only other undefeated club, had to settle for a draw when a promising 5/240 challenge to Glasshouse was washed out after three overs.

Two very important match-ups are threatened by the weather as the Swans host Caboolture and Gympie manages the local derby with form side Tewantin-Noosa.

This quartet comprises the top four currently and wins to the Gold and Swans would give a huge break on their rivals.

Beating the Snakes is a hard ask though, and the Maroochydore boys well remember the 4/387 chase they were handed in the one-day final last year.

Kev Hackney Oval can be a bowlers' graveyard but a little moisture can easily shorten the odds.

Gympie had a horror start to the 2-dayers with an ever changing list, but now the core of the side seems settled, the results have come.

Albert Park boasts a deck very susceptible to the weather, and the further north, the higher the chances of rain.

Both sides have match-winning bowlers and batting slumps, so any advantage to the ball could bring an early finish.

Yandina is nearing an inevitable maiden victory, being denied by just a couple of boundaries against Nambour last week.

Each game different players are showing the improvement in class needed, and the Pioneers require three or four of these performances to break through.

They meet Glasshouse, where just Jeremy Schultz and Brett Milini by themselves have 463 games of experience against the whole Pioneers' squad's combined 70-odd.

Yandina 'keeper Tom Suhr may have some inside knowledge of the Rangers from his five games there in 2001, though Schultz was the only member of the current side playing then.

A game-breaker could be Rangers' opening bowler Steve Heise, a left-armer who relishes assistance from the track.

If Thorogood Oval is on his side, it could be tough for the home batsmen.

Caloundra and Nambour would see each other as a means of progression on the ladder, and show patches of brilliance before lapsing back to mediocrity.

Maturity is developing in the Lighthouse batting, with experience in the bowling a plus, while the Cutters need their main players to come together in a game where losing will give no chance of improvement until January.

Runs at the top will be precious with Kobi Griggs away with the Scorchers' T20.

One-day points: Gympie 17, Maroochydore 12, Caboolture 8, Tewantin 8, Caloundra 7, Nambour 7, Glasshouse 4 and Yandina 0.

Gold and Gympie regional cricket are scheduled to play this weekend but it is subject to the weather. Get updates on The Gympie Times website.
