Gympie close to state title
THE Gympie under-18 men's hockey team had a successful state championships in Townsville last weekend.
Playing in the second division, their wins over Hervey Bay and Gladstone and a draw with Townsville ensured they topped their pool to advance to the finals.
The team then played their way into the grand final.
While they were not successful against a red-hot Sunshine Coast team, spokesman Gavin Gagen was happy with the team's efforts.
He said everyone played well, with captain Joey Collins, Drew Wenzel, Jye Weller and Mitch Collins starring. He was also impressed with the younger players who stepped up to play, in particular Sean Hardwick.
Gagen said he was now looking forward to the upcoming Summer Hockey season.
The Wednesday night competition will feature social games for both juniors and seniors, and begins on Wednesday, October 16.
Depending on numbers, juniors will play in boys or girls teams and seniors will play mixed. Registration forms are available from the Gympie Hockey website.
