Gympie chases Qld state title

THEY are young, quick, fit and chasing the holy grail for Gympie hockey - a senior men's state title.

Arguably the strongest ever senior men's hockey side has been assembled for an assault on the state hockey titles starting in Brisbane today.

The Gympie side has been boosted by the inclusion of former Gympie-based players now playing in Brisbane and three quality players from Bundaberg.

Gympie coach Ben Fitzpatrick said the Bundaberg players, Joel and Brodie Latham and Josh Stacey, had joined Gympie because they did not have a team competing in this year's championship.

Fitzpatrick said the three players had an impressive representative pedigree and would bolster Gympie's already lethal attacking ability.

University of Queensland Brisbane Division 1 players Nathan Stephens and Codey Warhurst are captain and vice-captain and hope to lead the team to a win.

They will be joined by fellow Brisbane-based players Mitch Robertson and Jordon Warhurst and a host of local Heat players including state reps Joey Collins and Drew Wenzel.

Fitzpatrick said Gympie were hoping to advance into the Premier League next year but had to win Division 2 this weekend.

To go into the premier division they will have to finish in the top two and then win the final.

Their main opposition looks to be Ipswich which was beaten in the final against Gold Coast last year.

The same side beat Gympie 7-0 last year.

Fitzpatrick said the Gympie side had learnt a lot since then and Ipswich was beatable.

"They will all be hard games, it won't be easy but they are all winnable.

"We are probably more of an attacking side this year, hopefully we can just score more goals than the other sides."

Fitzpatrick thanked sponsors Haymans Electrical and TSR Refrigeration for their generous support of the Gympie hockey team.
