Gympie celebrates the region's best sporting stars

FROM humble beginnings on the region's sporting fields, Gympie has cultivated numerous sport stars to take on the nation's and world's best.

Now The Gympie Times is on a mission to honour these trailblazing athletes and draw attention to their achievements.

A local sports star promotion is giving you, our valued readers, the chance to join the discussion and have a say in naming our top five and an overall greatest.

But first a top 10 list must shortlisted from the region's proud crop of sporting elite.

Spoilt for choice, this is no easy task.

Once a top 10 has been secured, online voting at www.gympietimes.com.au lets readers have a say.

Log on, cast your vote and join the debate.

After the poll closes, the votes will be tallied and the people's choice top five will be revealed.

A special two-page feature will celebrate the finalists and the overall winner, crowned as Gympie's greatest sports star.

The Gympie Times sports desk has trawled through decades of sports news to compile a list of sport stars who have done the region proud.

But we need your help.

Gympie woodchopping royalty Vic Summers is an immediate standout with a career littered with achievements and longevity.

Send suggestions to sport@gympietimes.com outlining the nomination.
