BUNNINGS will be open earlier under changes to Queensland opening hours announced this week in Parliament.

The changes will also reduce Queensland's complex network of 99 retail trading zones down to six.

The Gympie Bunnings will now open 6.30am-9pm weekdays, 8am-5pm Saturdays, 9am-6pm Sundays and 8.30am-5.30pm on public holidays.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced more standardised trading hours across the state as part of the government's implementation of the Mickel Report into trading hours.

She said the reforms would create jobs and help businesses and modernise trading hours.

"Under the current regulations, you can buy a boat in Queensland on a Sunday, but not a car or a caravan," she said.

"There are 99 different trading hours provisions. For Sunday alone, there are 30 different trading zones across Queensland."

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said no worker would be forced to work more.

Review author, former parliamentary speaker, John Mickel said the changes balanced better trading hours with the economic realities that faced regional Queensland.

"It's a compromise, I'm not going to say it was anything else.

"It's a compromise to get better trading conditions, while being sympathetic to the economic conditions in regional Queensland," he said.

The reforms will see Sunday trading standardised across Queensland with towns that currently do not have Sunday trading able to opt in.

All areas with Sunday trading will be able to trade on Easter Sunday, shops that can trade without restrictions will now include butchers, trade shows and special exhibitors. Cars and caravan sales will also now be able to be made on Sundays.

Shops will be able to apply for special trading hours to take advantage of major events such as the Commonwealth Games.

Outside south-east Queensland trading hours will now be 7am-9pm Monday-Friday, 7am-6pm on Saturday, and 9am-6pm on Sundays and most public holidays.

The only difference in the south-east corner is that Saturday trading hours will extend to 9pm.

There are a number of exemptions.

Hardware and building supply companies statewide will be allowed to open from 6am - meaning Bunnings will be open earlier both during the week and on weekends.

In certain tourist hubs, including Port Douglas and the Great Barrier Reef Wonderland Tourist Complex, trading hours will run from 6am-10pm Monday-Friday, 7am-10pm on Saturdays and 7am-9pm on Sundays and most public holidays.

Trading hours in major centres before the changes:

Gympie - 6.30am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 5pm Saturdays, 9am to 6pm Sunday, 8.30am to 5.30pm public holidays.

Fraser Coast - 8am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 5.30pm Saturdays, 9am to 6pm Sunday, 8.30am to 5.30pm public holidays.

Mackay - 8am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 5.30pm Saturdays, 9am to 6pm Sunday, 8.30am to 5.30pm public holidays.

Bundaberg - 8am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 5pm Saturdays, 9am to 6pm Sunday, 8.30am to 5.30pm public holidays.

Rockhampton - 8am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 5pm Saturdays, 9am to 6pm Sunday, 8.30am to 5.30pm public holidays.

Toowoomba - 8am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 5pm Saturdays, 9am to 6pm Sunday, 8.30am to 5.30pm public holidays.

Gladstone - 8am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 5pm Saturdays, 9am to 6pm Sunday, 8.30am to 5.30pm public holidays.

Ipswich - 7am to 9pm weekdays, 7am to 9pm Saturday, 9am to 6pm Sundays, 9am to 6pm public holidays

Sunshine Coast - 7am to 9pm weekdays, 7am to 9pm Saturday, 9am to 6pm Sundays, 9am to 6pm public holidays

Warwick - 8am to 9pm weekdays, 8am to 5pm Saturday, closed Sunday and public holiday
