Gympie braces for flooding
The Gympie Region is bracing for flooding as heavy rainfall continues in the Mary River catchment.
The Bureau of Meterology says further heavy rainfall is expected during the next 24 hours.
At present, very strong river level rises and flooding, including areas of major flooding, are being observed across the catchment. Minor to moderate flooding is expected at Gympie and Maryborough during Sunday. With heavy rainfall continuing, major flooding is possible at Gympie and Maryborough from late Sunday or early Monday.
Upstream of Gympie:
Minor flooding and strong river rises are occurring at Moy Pocket and Dagun Pocket, and moderate flooding is expected to develop during Sunday.
The Mary River at Gympie has exceeded the minor flood level early Sunday morning, and is continuing to rise. The Mary River at Gympie is expected to exceed the moderate flood level during Sunday morning.
Gympie to Maryborough:
Major flooding is expected during Sunday at Miva and Tiaro.
Minor to moderate flooding is expected to develop in Maryborough during Sunday.
Predicted River Heights/Flows:
Gympie: Exceed moderate flood level (12 metres) Sunday morning.
Maryborough: Exceed minor flood level (5 metres) Sunday morning.
