Basketball stars contest final

SIX Gympie basketball players attempted to steer Woody’s to victory in the Maroochydore A Grade men’s final Wednesday night.

The game was played at Maroochydore Clippers Stadium and Woody’s succumbed to the strength of the Storm, going down by 10 points.

Gympie player Marcus Matthews was one of six Gympie players taking part.

Also lining up against the Storm were Leith Brown, Dai Jackson, Scott Jackson, Leeroy Todd, and Michael Towner. Matthews said the game was hard-fought but the Storm were just too polished.

“They shot really well and were solid on the free pointers,” he said.

“It was our second season in the competition and to win through to the grand final is a big achievement.”

Woody’s won directly through to the grand final in their semi final clash a fortnight ago and Matthews said the week off may have been costly for the side.

“It gave us a rest but we might have gone off the boil a bit with our form,” he said.
