Gympie AFL stars make Wide Bay
THE future of AFL in Gympie is looking solid after eight players were confirmed to have been selected for Wide Bay duties this week.
Wide Bay selection trials for primary and secondary school students were used to handpick the talent from the region and primary school trials’ organiser Janelle Westlake is delighted with the outcome.
“It’s been a great result for Gympie,” she said.
“We have the most number of Gympie players selected in Wide Bay teams for quite a long time.”
Primary school players selected include Joel Perry-Warren, Wade Bleisner, Rory Lehame and Hayden Tompkins, while secondary school representatives are Harry White, Jordan Tucker, Jack Clouston and Hayden Rogers.
As members of Wide Bay, the AFL players will play at a state level later in the year in the hope of gaining selection to play for Queensland.
Primary school players will travel to Cairns in June for state championships while secondary school representatives will undertake a journey to Bundaberg in May.
Westlake said all Wide Bay players were from the Gympie Cats AFL Club.
“It really reflects that the hard work the club is putting into its junior development is starting to pay off,” she said.
“It’s very encouraging for Gympie AFL.”
