Gym junkies tricking GPs into prescribing them steroids

TALL tales about sex problems, low testosterone and dipping energy levels are being used by bodybuilders to convince doctors to prescribe them steroids.

The strategies are being spread on online bodybuilding forums across Australia, which give examples and tips on how best to obtain "gear" without breaking the law.

The Daily Telegraph reports that one site had users explaining that a male doctor is more likely to be sympathetic, and more likely to give you that prescription you crave.

"Not being sexist but a male doctor is likely to be more understanding," one wrote.

"If possible, it makes your case much more credible if your girlfriend or wife can go along with you and tell all the stuff with you."

It follows revelations that needle exchanges in Sydney's west are now having to catering to the swelling number of steroid users.

Longer-term steroid use can lead to heart attacks, strokes and death, particularly if combined with other drugs including speed or ecstacy.

They can also cause mood swings and violent behaviour.
