Guitar maker builds giant
A FIVE metre, 140kg playable guitar is set to be a new attraction for Gympie. The guitar is being built by Terry “Simo” Simon, of Simo’s Music, who has already spent about 300 hours on the project.
In another 100 hours or two weeks he will be ready to stand the guitar in place at the front of his Hyne Street music shop.
All that is left to do is string it up, finish the paint and build an A-frame guitar stand to help keep it upright.
Once completed, Mr Simon said it would be the only playable five-metre guitar in Australia that has been built to scale.
The luthier, or guitar builder, said he modelled the giant guitar on a Gibson. With 30 years’ experience building guitars it was the hardest one Mr Simon had ever made, time-wise, as it took about 40 hours to make a standard Western guitar.
Once completed, the guitar can be played, but it will take two people – one to pluck the strings and the other to hit the notes.
He has built an amplifier into the body of the guitar that he can turn on to “get the strings humming” like a wind chime and play songs through.
Recently he proved the guitar was playable. “She goes,” he said.
