Greyhound graveyard discoveries just 'tip of the iceberg'

INVESTIGATIONS into a dumping ground of dead greyhounds near Bundaberg continue as the RSPCA examines some of the carcasses.

A Queensland RSPCA spokesman said it was still too early to tell how the greyhounds died and that RSPCA vets would carry out the post mortems, starting this week.

MORE GREYHOUND NEWS:

He said they had removed some bodies, skulls and torsos and would examine those where the cause of death was still unclear.

The spokesman said it was still not known for sure whether the mass graveyard at the reserve in the Coonarr area was a common dumping ground and whether the dogs found there were underperforming or retired racing dogs.

He also said this was also just the tip of the iceberg.

"There is a large amount of what they call wastage within the industry, there is no doubt about that," he said. "There is wastage in the horse industry as well."

There is also another alleged mass grave of greyhounds in NSW, west of Newcastle, where dogs are reported to have been shot and dumped in a pit.

Following the discovery of the 55 carcasses near Bundaberg, the RSPCA spokesman said people had been mortified. He said their call centre and Facebook page had been flooded with responses.

"There is no doubt animal lovers are very distressed," he said.

Following the joint RSPCA and police investigation, a 71-year-old Bundaberg man and 64-year-old Bundaberg woman have been arrested and charged with firearm offences.

The RSPCA issued the woman, a horse and greyhound trainer, with welfare directions after examining some of the animals at her property.

The spokesman said if she doesn't comply with the orders, the RSPCA would look into seizing the animals.
