Greens MP defends banned Gayby Baby documentary

BALLINA MP Tamara Smith has criticised the NSW Education Minister and Premier's "knee-jerk reaction" to calls to ban the film Gayby Baby from being shown in public schools.

"Gayby Baby is an important and wonderful film that tells the stories of a number of families in NSW from children's perspectives," she said.

"I'm very concerned about the message being sent to young people about sexuality and gender identity by the government's decision to ban this film.

Gayby Baby will screen at the Star Court Theatre in Lismore, followed by Q & A with director Maya Newell and producer Charlotte Mars, on Friday, September 4, from 7pm, organised by Screenworks. It will also be shown at Byron Bay's Pighouse Flicks on Saturday, September 5,  at 6.30pm and again at the Star Court Theatre Sunday, September 6, at 2.30pm and 5.30pm.

"Schools should be a place where sexuality and gender identity can be discussed in a way that is inclusive and builds understanding and films like Gayby Baby do this in an important way."

Ms Smith said that as a former teacher, she would use the film to "explore identity and gender", and said the excuse that it wasn't in the curriculum "simply does not stand up to scrutiny".

"The government should lift the ban and allow teachers and students to be able to use this film as an important resource to actively foster safe schools for students and their families," she said.
