WHEN a doctor suggested Tamara MacKenzie build her core strength to cope with severe sciatic pain, she came up with a creative solution.

Six years after she took up pole dancing at Beyond Gravity Pole Fitness Academy, Tamara is getting set to compete in her first competition, the Queensland Pole Championships in Brisbane on June 27.

"There's a combination of nerves and excitement that is spinning around inside me," she said.

It's not the first time Tamara has taken to the stage, performing at showcases throughout the region and at the Encore Sydney Pole Show.

Tamara now trains others at Beyond Gravity Pole Fitness Academy and said she loved being able to work with students of all ages, genders and physical abilities.

"Pole challenges and rewards, and is a great release for me creatively," she said.

"I've been fortunate enough to meet some amazing people from across the country and globally too.

"Most of all, I love that it does not discriminate."

Tamara said she had been working on her routine for the championships for 10 weeks, although the idea had been swimming around in her mind for a year.

"I'm very excited to be able to share it on stage," she said.

"There's been a lot of changes, rearranging, adapting and brainstorming to get it to where it is now."

Tamara has worked with fellow Gladstone instructor Jessica Thalborne and Beyond Gravity Pole Fitness Academy owner Emma McDonald to create the championship routine.

She said the three bounced ideas off each other and gave a lot of support.

"Emma has experienced the competition world and has expert knowledge she can share about training, keeping cool-headed and working through the stages of preparing," Tamara said.

"It has been challenging balancing a full-time job and other commitments between training and training alone can get hard most days, but you know it's all for something truly unique and beautiful in the end."
