Govt’s ‘strategic’ Rattler funding
"THE Queensland Government had made a strategic decision to support the Mary Valley Rattler, in addition to other Royalties for the Regions funding," Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said.
Speaking at Old Gympie Railway Station, Mr Seeney said the Royalties for the Regions program was intended to return mining royalties to the community and had initially been aimed at helping the regions where the mining money was being generated.
But that emphasis had now changed and the money was becoming available in non-mining regions too, he said.
He said the Rattler funding was not something applied for by Gympie Regional Council.
"We have two mechanisms for funding under R4R, funds applied for by regional councils and funds allocated as a result of strategic decisions made at state government level.
"The funding is conditional on the preparation of a robust business plan and work program for the restoration works by the newly formed Rattler Railway Company," he said.
Councils have until September 26 to apply for further grants.
