GourMay lunch ‘berry’ nice

COOLOOLA Berries at Wolvi hosted a Farmers Lunch last Saturday as part of GourMAY 2016, Gympie’s Eat Local month.

The event saw 34 people sitting down to share a meal.

Guests enjoyed a glass of sparkling rose on arrival and met growers and producers from the region.

Farm owners Jason and Kim Lewis joined forces with Michael Hehir from Capelli Foods to design a menu as a tribute to local farmers, producers and winemakers who work tirelessly in delivering the region’s best.

The dishes showcased the Lewis’ farming neighbours:

David and Michelle Agnew of Coondoo Claw who produce redclaw on their 30acre property 25kms west of Gympie;

Ollie and Sandra Linstrom, of Lindolls Macadamias, a family owned and run macadamia farm in beautiful Goomboorian which grows quality nuts to the local region;

Llocal standouts Steve and Trena Waugh of Farmer & Sun who have been farming in Gympie for more than 35 years;

Brad and Melinda Mirvane, of Rhodavale Pork, Lower Wonga, whose pigs live outside in the grass, dirt and mud doing only what a pig does best, while still enjoying the safety, comfort and protection from predators, disease and the elements;

Daniel and Linda Tabone, of Suncoast Limes who supply the their limes all year round to some of Australia’s largest retailers;

Unreel Seafood sourced in the pristine waters o the Great Sandy Straits at Tin Can Bay.

Guests had the opportunity to hear from producers about their passion for good food.

Kingsely Grove owner and chief winemaker Simon Berry provided a spectacular wine master class with the four-ourse meal served with matched wines.

Simon and Jo Berry are two very innovative people who work with their family business who manage the Kingaroy vinyard, processing and bottling on site.

Kingsely Grove Wines will be available at Cooloola Berries this season.

Jasoon and Kim were inspired by the region’s local beauty and and wanted to put the region’s best foot forward.

GourMAY puts the whole food community on the map and is a huge drawcard for the area. With so many events, there is something for everyone.

Cooloola Berries has recently undergone renovations which include alfresco dining.

“it’s a beautiful daytime spot, so think brunch, lunch or mid-afternoon for a glass of wine and local producers menu,” they said.

Jason and Kim Lewis moved with their family to Gympie just over 10 years ago and saw the opportunity to build a food tourism business. The location is perfectly situated with growing tourism for foodies and nature lovers who are drawn to the natural beauty of the region.

Jason grew up with farming, with his parents and grandparents farming in the Lockyer Valley and seasonally in NSW and Victoria. Kim’s parents were involved in small business in the Noosa region.

The family’s passion for small-scale farming and determination is definitely part of of the reason why Cooloola Berries has welcomed thousands of visitors each season to their farm gate.
