Goodwill in war zones

THIS Christmas the Gympie RSL Sub-branch, Vietnam Veterans Association and Technical Aid to the Disabled (TADSA) are joining forces to help local men and women in war-torn countries.

Gympie RSL Sub-branch president Ivan Friske said the groups would fund care packages for service personnel but needed addresses before the packages could be sent out.

Mr Friske said he had talked to two men who had just returned from Afghanistan, and they both agreed goodwill packages boosted morale.

The top of the wish list for our Aussie troops is Tim Tams, but other biscuits and sweets, instant noodles and personal grooming items including deodorant, sunscreen and lip balm were up there.

“It’s stuff that doesn’t come from the army system. It shows them they’re being thought of at home,” he said. “It makes life a little easier in a war zone.”

Mr Friske said all addresses would be treated in the strictest confidence.
