Goodchild Shield postponed

THE weather, kind enough to allow the A Grade Twenty20 final to proceed Saturday evening, was not so generous for the opening round of the Goodchild Shield Sunday.

Gympie was due to tackle Bundaberg in the first round of the competition but match officials were left with no choice but to cancel the fixture after heavy rain overnight.

The decision to call the match off was made shortly after 7am to give both teams ample notice.

Gympie Cricket Association president Bob Blackburn said points would be shared between both sides.

The cancellation of the Goodchild Shield encounter joined a long list of sporting casualties from the wet weekend.

With early forecasts hinting at possible showers early Saturday morning before clearing, cricketers are hoping to get a run.
