Golf day to help fund athletes

THE Gympie Amateur Athletics Club is in the middle of a mammoth fundraising effort to send more than 20 of its athletes to the Queensland State Championships later this month.

The Queensland State Championships will be held in Townsville between March 24-28, and the Gympie athletes preparing to go qualified after excelling at the Regional Championships in Caboolture earlier this year.

But the trip to Townsville will carry a significant cost for families, so the Gympie Amateur Athletics Club has banded together to roll out a fundraising blitz.

Included so far in the fundraising effort has been numerous raffles at Friday night club meets, a cent auction and, starting this weekend, a series of three sausage sizzles at Melco.

The spirit of the Gympie club has shone through during the combined effort to raise funds, and keeping things going will be a special “golf day” at the Gympie Pines Golf Course next weekend.

To be held Sunday, the Golf Day, a four player Ambrose, is a challenge for golfers eager to tackle the Gympie Pines course, while also enabling participants to chip in for a worthwhile cause.

The Gympie Pines Golf Club is accepting nominations now ahead of the event and can be contacted on 5482 1370.

Meanwhile, golfers will need to be at the golf course Sunday at 11am for a 11.30am start.

There will be an afternoon barbecue and great prizes on offer for golfers who want to test their luck off the greens.

Training in the lead up to the state championships has been hampered by rain for the Gympie athletes over the week.

With predictions of more rain on the way, the ambitious athletes will be itching to hit the track again when rain eases.
