Gold XI win buoys confidence

THE Gympie Gold XI took their first win of the 2011/12 season against Nambour on Saturday.

Gympie manager Bob Blackburn said the team took a lot of positives out of the game and were ready for their first home clash this weekend against Maroochydore at Albert Park.

Gympie bowled Nambour out for 81 two weekends ago after a masterful display of swing bowling by Tom White.

White took 5/21 and set the Gold XI up for their first win.

On Saturday the Gold XI scored 222 in reply.

Troy Ashton led from the front on Saturday and set a great score with a well worked 59 runs.

Gold keeper Cameron Quinn got some much needed batting practise and top scored for the Gold racking up a credible 68.

But Blackburn said he was impressed with youngster Chris Darrach who scored 26.

Blackburn said it was Darrach's first game playing for the Gold and he performed well.

Nambour went into bat for their second innings and ended the day at 3 for 116.

Blackburn said the team was happy with their win.

"The boys were really thrilled with the win and it will give them some confidence for the next game," Blackburn said.

The Gold XI will play Maroochydore at home this weekend.

It's their first home game for the season.

Maroochydore was beaten outright last weekend by the Hinterland Hawks.

"It should be a close game but we are hopeful for another win," Blackburn said.

The Team for next week is Steve Brady captain, Cameron Quinn vice-captain, Chris Darrach, Troy Ashton, Andy Batten, Tom White, Danny Smith, Ben Gear, Travis Chandler, Brad Millard, and Dan Shepperson.

Play is on Albert Park No.1.
