Gold fins seek national medals

GYMPIE Gold Fins swimmers Katie Connolly, Scott Gear and Drew Timbs are taking advantage of the school holidays to compete in the 2010 Australian Age Championships this week.

The high-class competition is being held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, Homebush, commencing yesterday and finishing Saturday.

The swimmers were putting the finishing touches on their preparations at the Gympie Memorial Pool last week.

Connolly will be competing in the 16 years 50m freestyle, Gear in the 15 years boys 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly and Timbs in the 14 years boys 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly.

Gympie Gold Fins swimming club race carnival secretary Cherie Carlson said Timbs was taking on a hefty workload but was more than up to the task.

“Drew is no longer training with our club as he has moved to Toowoomba to boarding school but is still swimming under our club name,” she said.

Timbs’ decision to remain affiliated with the Gold Fins highlights the pride the young swimmer feels for the club he has grown up with.

Keep an eye on The Gympie Times next week for results from the three swimmers’ tilt at national glory in Sydney.
