Gold Coast crime operation awarded investigation of the year

A DRUG and Serious Crime operation that targeted vehicle rebirthing and drug trafficking out of the Gold Coast has been internationally recognized.

Operation Kilo Zurich began in 2013 targeting a criminal network that spanned across multiple jurisdictions falsifying vehicle registrations and licenses in order to rebirth stole vehicles mostly from the Gold Coast.

In addition to $1.3 million worth of caravans, motorcycles, jet skis, boats, trailers and heavy machinery, the operation seized more than $1 million worth of drugs and $10 in criminal assets.

Investigators worked closely with Commonwealth and State law enforcement to charge a total of 49 offenders with 247 charges, 106 of which were vehicle related.

Detective Inspector Scott Knowles of the Major and Organised Crime Squad said the operation's success is a testament to the hard work from the dedicated officers involved.

"There was much time spent meticulously sifting through documentation and working with other agencies to identify and track the movements and strategies used by this group in order to bring about a successful conclusion," he said.

Representatives from the Drug and Serious Crime Group were in Perth on Monday to receive the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI) Investigation of the Year Award in Perth.
