Gold Coast bid for 2018 Games

THE State government will this morning announce it would support the formal bid for the Gold Coast to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Premier will at 10.30am break from the Growth Management Summit being held at the State Library at South bank and move to the fifth floor boardroom to make the announcement with Gold Coast mayor Ron Clarke accompanied by triple Olympian and dual Commonwealth Games member Rick Mitchell.

Mitchell, now a Brisbane based consultant, carried the Australian flag at the opening ceremony to the 1982 Commonwealth games in Brisbane, won Olympic silver in Moscow. He won four medals including gold in the 400 metres track at the 1978 Edmonton Commonwealth Games.

The government has already committed $11 million towards the bid which would also be contested by New Zealand.

The Premier told ABC radio earlier this month that an independent assessment by the Commonwealth games Association had found the Gold Coast capable of hosting the event.

She said it would be an important part of developing the Gold Coast during the next decade.

Bids for the 2018 Commonwealth games close today.
