Give us a choice at the poll
WE ARE lucky to have the right to vote, but you can't blame people for losing interest.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is said by some to be under pressure to announce an early election, because it is claimed she should take advantage of One Nation's allegedly poor showing in Western Australia, where the conservatives allegedly lost votes because of that preference deal with One Nation.
But what if it was the other way round and One Nation suffered by selling itself out to one of the big parties, the ones it is supposed to be different from?
To quote LNP veteran Jeff Seeney, One Nation is good at identifying issues, not so good at fixing them. But identifying issues is not a bad start and is sometimes more than the big parties manage.
Take white spot disease, for example. This exotic threat is out there, out of control and seriously threatening to economy and environment.
You will be able to read about it on The Gympie Times website later today. And it is there only because major parties have consistently backed free trade over biosecurity.
They did not listen to the fishing industry on one side and conservationists on the other - and both were too close to one major party or another - like One Nation was in WA.
