Girl's drowning probed as appeal is set up to help

POLICE are still investigating the drowning of an eight-year-old girl at a lake near Laidley as the community grieves the tragic loss.

The girl drowned in a popular swimming and camping spot Lake Dyer on Sunday afternoon.

Police and emergency services were called to the lake about 3.45pm Sunday after the girl was reported missing by her parents.

After a search by Laidley SES, Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service officers, the girl was found submerged in the water near a boat ramp.

Laidley police Sergeant Jim McDonald said the family members were locals and it was yet to be established if they were camping at the lake.

Police have taken statements from witnesses, with many more coming forward to police yesterday.

Founding director of charity Hannah's Foundation Andrew Plint said many families witnessed tragedies. Mr Plint lost his own daughter Hannah in 2007, who drowned in the backyard swimming pool.

He said the family would be going through hell and his foundation had offered its services.

"Hell is probably the easiest way to describe it, and asking themselves so many questions of what if," he said.

Mr Plint said the foundation had helped families at Lake Dyer on Sunday.

"There are a lot of people hurting in the community and a lot of people were touched by what's happened," he said.

He said supervision of children near water was imperative, given the dynamic environment which usually surrounds it.

An appeal has been mounted to help the family affected by the tragedy. An account has been set up with NAB. The account details are:

  • BSB 084 771
  • Acc No 393 761 387
  • Acc Name Renee Carvolth
