Gibbo stirs pension storm
GYMPIE MP David Gibson took the risk of insulting a large proportion of his electoral supporters this week, when he blasted the pension aspirations of “baby boomer” retirees and those hoping to retire soon.
Announcing that he wanted to “take off his politician’s hat and speak as David Gibson,” he spoke at a Sunshine Coast session of the “Our Future, Your Say” forum, organised by The Courier-Mail at Sippy Downs on the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday night.
The Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Planning told his audience that baby boomers were “selfish” to expect other generations to pay for their retirement.
“We have a situation here where we have a generation that has paid their taxes – and I’ll accept that – but has done nothing to prepare themselves for retirement.
“They expect a standard of living comparable to when they were working. So the burden is then placed on my generation and my children’s generation to support that. And that never ceases to amaze me,” he said.
Mr Gibson’s remarks attracted an angry response from bloggers who said the taxes paid by baby boomers included funding of pensions. “It is what we were promised in return for getting the next generation on track,” said one.
But another said young people were worse off because of housing prices.
