THE University of the Sunshine Coast's Headstart program has opened the door to university life for Gympie district Year 12 student Sophie Goulis, who loves every minute of it.

The Widgee resident now attends classes at USC Gympie (at the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE campus) after enrolling in the Headstart program last year to prepare herself for a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree.

Headstart is an award-winning program that allows young people to study two university subjects while still at school, with their efforts earning credit towards a USC degree.

Sophie, 17, said she was thrilled to be able to study university-level subjects while being home-schooled for Year 12 through Groves Christian College.

She achieved a High Distinction in her first subject, communication and thought, last year and is well on her way to another in health, culture and society.

"I have absolutely loved the whole process, especially getting a taste for some of the subjects I will get to study as part of my degree," she said. "I feel it has prepared me for the transition to university life and I will be starting my degree with two subjects completed."

Headstart has attracted more than 900 students from schools across the Sunshine Coast and wider region since 2003.

The most popular courses have included communication and thought, introduction to creative writing, introduction to psychology, innovation, Indonesian and Japanese.

USC External Relations manager Kylie Russell said Headstart also featured drama as one of the latest course additions.

"Headstart students attend lectures and tutorials with USC students and learn from academics who have practical industry experience," Ms Russell said.

Applications for Headstart for Semester 2, 2013, will close on Friday, May 10.
