Removalists help motor neruone family relocate for free
THE generosity of a local company has saved the Bartrum family more than $3000 in removalist costs.
Yesterday Allied Pickfords Gladstone packed up Jamie and Todd Bartrum's home contents free of charge.
Mr Bartrum has motor neurone disease.
The family will move to the Gold Coast on Friday to be close to friends and family to ensure they have plenty of support as his condition slowly worsens.
They have lived in Gladstone for five years.
Mrs Bartrum was speechless over the company's kind gesture.
"It was pretty crazy," she said. "They've all come around to help out our family."
"We never expected any of this."
Mr Bartrum was diagnosed with MND in April 2013.
MND causes the nerves which control our ability to speak, move, breathe and swallow to degenerate.
There is no known cure.
Mr Bartrum, who was a forklift operator on Curtis Island, said the community had treated his family well.
"As much as we love this place, I want to go home to family and friends," he said.
"It will make everything easier for me and Jamie," he said.
"Gladstone has been good to us. Since we've been here we've got married and travelled to Singapore.
"But at the moment it's just getting to the stage that if I get any worse it's just going to be more difficult getting down to the Gold Coast."
They had several quotes for the removalist job that were between $3000-$4000.
Allied Pickfords general manager Lucia Hamilton shared the thinking behind the gesture:
Compassion is born of many things - love, tragedy, hardships and so on. and so forth.
The compassion I speak about in this story is for strangers I met during my day-to-day work.
I met Jamie and Todd when I went to quote to on relocating their furniture from Gladstone.
Todd has motor neurone disease and is moving his family closer to his wife's family and doctors.
I was so impressed with this strong, loving family unit, I came back to the office and mentioned this to my business partners, Helen and Tim Curran.
Helen and I then made the decision to move this family as inexpensively as possible.
We rallied our staff and contractors and they all agreed to do this at their own expense.
I want to acknowledge this kindness of by our staff and say how much this gesture was appreciated by Tim, Helen and myself.
We wish Jamie and Todd all the best.
