Ben Gear wins Scorchers jersey
GYMPIE junior cricketer Ben Gear has used the start of the season to embrace a new phase of his burgeoning career.
Gear, 16, has been selected in the Under 18 Sunshine Coast Scorchers cricket side to play in the Brisbane competition after weeks of stepping through a trial process.
Proud father Russell said his son, a middle order batsman, had done extremely well to make the side.
“It’s a big breakthrough for Ben. He had to play really well to make the side,” Russell said.
Gear was promoted to the young Scorchers side after capturing the attention of coach Brad Murphy.
Russell said Brad gave Ben “a fair go” as one of 25 cricketers vying for selection.
“It’s really hard when you are not in the Sunshine Coast system to get selected, but Brad gave Ben a fair go with the number of trial games,” Russell said.
“Playing those games allowed Brad to get a good idea of how Ben plays.”
Although selected in the Scorchers side, Ben knows he must perform well each week to hold onto his position.
Nothing can be taken for granted - a slump in form means he could be dropped.
“There’s a bit of pressure, for sure, but it’s good for everyone because it helps players perform at their best,” Russell said.
“Ben is up for the challenge and is looking forward to the season ahead.”
Making the whole selection process official for Ben was receiving the Sunshine Coast Scorchers uniform last week.
There’s not a single grass stain on it just yet, but that will change next weekend when Ben plays his first game for the Scorchers.
The Scorchers will be playing University away in Brisbane and Ben will get his first taste of the elite level of cricket.
Helping him settle into the new team environment will be training once a week with the Scorchers squad.
Russell said Ben’s game only stood to benefit from the training.
“It’s something different and he will have access to different coaching and a new team environment,” he said.
The cricketer’s selection to play for the Sunshine Coast Scorchers continues a run of representative success for Gympie.
Gympie players involved in the Scorchers A Grade outfit include Lewis Waugh, Josh Brady and Kaden Dickfos.
Ben plays for Gympie A Grade side Colts and a big season ahead will have the young cricketer on his toes.
