Funeral plans and insurance to face scrutiny

UNFAIR funeral products are in the sights of the Queensland Office of Fair Trading (OFT) as part of a national campaign to help indigenous consumers avoid signing up to costly, expensive and unsuitable contracts.

Funeral insurance, pre-paid funeral plans and funeral bonds are among the products to be examined to ensure they don't contain terms and conditions unfair to consumers.

Efforts would be focused on those products marketed and targeted at indigenous consumers, given their prevalence in the marketplace.

Fair Trading executive director Brian Bauer said he encouraged indigenous consumers to consider all their options before signing up for a funeral product.

Complaints can be made on the OFT's website at www.qld.gov.au/fairtrading.
