Fun run holds special meaning for family

SHAE Ivory has a special reason to run at this year's Run for MI Life with the event created from her uncle's legacy.

Michael Ivory took his own life in 2012.

Shea was on the committee that organised the event last year that saw up to 1800 participants in the fun run.

"It was a great turn out for its first year," she said.

This year they are hoping to have 3000 at the event.

"Everyone has been affected by suicide or depression," Shea said.

"There is a high rate, especially in Central Queensland and Mackay."

Shea said she always thought of her uncle while running.

"(His death) was very shocking for me," Shea said.

She said the fun run was not all about tragedy and was about getting people out and talking about suicide and depression in a "pleasant environment".

"It's just a change for everyone to be positive and open about the issues," she said.

"Give people something positive and constructive they can do to reduce stigma of suicide."

To launch Run for MI Life this year, the organising committee will have a Remembrance Journey at the Botanic Gardens on April 19.

There will be a 3km and 5km fun run through the botanic garden.

This will be the first year of the Remembrance Journey, as a launching event for the main fun run later this year.

Michael Ivory's sister Jo is also on the organising committee for the event.

"Anyone can participate in the fun run," she said. "It is a very inclusive event so that the runners can feel that they belong to something."

Registration for the Remembrance Journey is at 3.30pm for a 4.30pm start on April 19. Cost of the run is $10 for adults, $5 for kids under 12 and $25 for a family smile emoticon.
