TOOWOOMBA now has a full-time bike squad, with police officers set to patrol the region on two wheels.

Senior Constable Geordie Horn initiated the squad last year, with he and Constable Chris Macklin now full-time bike squad officers.

"As a police service we are obviously looking at new initiatives and ways that we can better police the community of Toowoomba and make the community safe and reduce crime," Snr Const Horn said.

"So there're two officers working full time in Toowoomba. They will be responsible for servicing the central business district in addition to the outlying suburbs within Toowoomba."

Snr Const Horn said they were able to access areas more easily and have more interaction with the community, including with homeless people who they have been able to help with gaining accommodation.

"The easy access into certain areas has allowed police to patrol more thoroughly Queens Park and a lot of the parks around Toowoomba in addition to the water ways and schools," he said.

There are currently 12 other officers trained to undertake bike patrols.

Toowoomba Regional Council has thrown its support behind the initiative. Cr Carol Taylor said the bike squad represented community policing at its best.

"I congratulate the police service on this," she said.
