Fraser Maheno wreck is Anzac link for us and New Zealand

FRASER Island's wreck of the former Gallipoli hospital ship, SS Maheno, has become an enduring link between Queensland and the Maheno's "home" town of Otago, New Zealand.

Queenslander David Moss, who attended last year's Anzac Day commemoration at the Maheno wreck, spoke to a crowd of about 120 people at the Maheno war memorial in Otago, according to a report in the Otago Daily Times.

He spoke about the similarities of Anzac commemorations across the Tasman, the paper reported.

This year's Maheno Anzac service master of ceremonies Colin Ewing traveled to Fraser Island last year for Anzac Day and Mr Moss said this year it was his turn to cross the Ditch to attend an Anzac service.

He said the day toook on a different meaning in rural areas, because small towns cared more.

"Be proud of the turnout you put on in these little country towns of yours," he said.

"We're proud of ours."
