Fraser Island 'rollercoaster' road gets $1 million makeover

A NOTORIOUS stretch of road - affectionately referred to as "the rollercoaster" by Fraser Island locals - has been given a $1 million makeover.

Kingfisher Hill, which connects Kingfisher Bay Resort to the Great Sandy National Park, has attracted widespread criticism over the years due to the damage it has caused to vehicles.

In the past 10 weeks the 800m stretch has been graded and sealed by the Department of National Parks.

Kingfisher Bay Resort general manager David Hay said the resort had been lobbying the department to fix the stretch for 15 years.

"It's a common misconception that Kingfisher Hill is on resort property and over the years we've spent a lot of time and money maintaining it," he said.

"We've had resort visitors drive to the bottom of the hill and flatly refuse to negotiate the track."

He said he had no doubt the new road would mean more tourists would now visit the western side of the island.

"One great example is drivers who tow trailers will now be able to safely traverse this section of road via Kingfisher Hill as well as from Wanggoolba Creek," Mr Hay said.

Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing's Neil Cambourn said the total cost of the works was expected to be $1,090,000.
