Four dead in horror Hunter car crashes

Four people have died across two separate crashes in the Hunter Region since Sunday morning.

Three people were killed and a man was left in a critical condition after a head-on crash at Muswellbrook just before 9.30pm on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to Bengalla Rd following a crash between a Kia Carnival and a ute.

A man reportedly in his 30s was driving the ute and died at the scene, while the male driver and female passenger of the Kia Carnival also died at the scene.

The ages of the man and woman in the Kia are unknown and they have yet to be formally identified.

A man believed to be in his 60s was a passenger in the Kia and was taken to John Hunter Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officers from Hunter Valley Police District have established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the crash.

Earlier on Sunday at Upper Allyn, about 125km from Muswellbrook, a woman was killed and a second woman injured following a single-vehicle crash.

Emergency services were called to Allyn River Rd, Upper Allyn following reports a Toyota Landcruiser had rolled down an embankment and crashed into Allyn River.

Witnesses scaled the embankment and freed the female passenger before performing CPR on her.

The treatment was continued by NSW Ambulance paramedics when they arrived but the woman died at the scene and she is yet to be formally identified.

The driver, an 18-year-old woman, managed to free herself from the vehicle before she was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital and she is in a stable condition.

Officers from Port Stephens Hunter Police District established a crime scene and launched an investigation, while a report will be prepared for the coroner.
