Former MP dies in Gympie
FORMER Gympie MP Len Stephan died in Gympie on Sunday, his family announced yesterday.
Born in Brisbane, Mr Stephan represented the Gympie electorate from 1979 to 2001, as a member of the National Party.
A farmer and Widgee Shire councillor, Mr Stephan was also Gympie Agricultural Show president before entering politics.
He was deputy government whip from 1987 to 1989, government whip for three months after that and filled a number of opposition spokesman roles.
He survived a One Nation challenge in 1998.
After his retirement at the 2001 election, the National Party lost the seat to One Nation's Elisa Roberts.
A family announcement said he died peacefully at Grevillea Gardens Retirement Centre.
A private funeral service for him was held yesterday.
He was 77 years old.
