Flexing for cancer fund
BODY BUILDING: Gympie man and body building champion Mac Hosking is hosting the first Gympie Muscle Muster next month in support of Cancer Council Queensland's Gympie Relay For Life.
Mr Hosking is calling on the community to start flexing and register for the event on Sunday, October 4, from 4.30pm at James Nash High School.
"It is a contest to raise money for our major passion (helping those fighting cancer) and an opportunity to encourage fitness and experience for those looking to take body building to another level."
Hosking, 63, has been going to the gym since 2003, initially to improve his health after realising there was an issue when he could not keep up with his children.
He began body building competitively upon seeing other eager gym goers doing the competitions.
Since 2012, Hosking has competed in International Natural Body Building Association Australia competitions in Brisbane.
He has three Brisbane titles in men's masters - two in masters men 60-plus and one 50-plus title.
He also has a Queensland title in the men's 60-plus and was runner-up to the Australian title for men's 60-plus.
Mac and Margret Hosking only moved to Gympie in February this year with a passion for fitness and keen to lend a helping hand.
"My wife and I have been long-term supporters of Relay For Life and exercise is also a big part of my life so I couldn't think of a better way to raise funds for such an important cause," Mr Hosking said.
"I was struggling with my health a few years back and decided to make a commitment to eat healthily and exercise and it changed my life, which is why events like Relay are so important - it's about encouraging people to get active and take charge of their health.
"The Gympie Muscle Muster is going to be a lot of fun and you don't have to be a pro athlete to take part. We have a category to suit everyone and if competing isn't your thing, you'll get just as much enjoyment being in the audience.
"Most importantly, this event is about making a difference in the fight against cancer - it's something that impacts us all and events like Relay For Life give hope that we can one day beat it."
